What is "Divine Service"?
The Divine Service is where God's children gather to receive His love, grace, and forgiveness in Christ Jesus through Word and Sacrament.
It is NOT primarily about Christians serving their God but rather about God serving His people. In the Divine Service God serves us in the following:
He gives us the forgiveness Christ won for us through His life, death, and resurrection. This comes to us through the Rite of Confession and Absolution where the pastor publicly announces God grace to the penitent sinner.
He feed us with the Bread of Life, His own words from the Holy Scriptures which reveal His beloved Son and through which the Holy Spirit creates and strengthens faith. The Word of God permeates our liturgies and is featured in readings from the Old Testament, the Epistles, and the Gospels. It is also proclaimed and explained in the sermon.
He washes us and claims us as His children in the Rite of Holy Baptism, a washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.
He serves us a Sacramental meal in the bread and wine of Holy Communion where we receive not only Christ's true body and blood but also the forgivenss of sins, life and salvation.
